This week we have something of a slightly different nature to offer you….We’ll be taking a look at the visual side of things with designer Tânia Filipa.  Tânia currently resides in Lisbon, Portugal, and although she has only been designing for a short period of time, her art has afforded her the opportunity of working for many familiar names in the Techno scene.  Her work uses sharp shapes and colours that scream Techno and stir up a sense of nostalgia. Filipa’s work has been featured on vinyl records, clothing, and websites, among other projects in the music industry. We are very fortunate to have her as the resident designer at EchoisOne. She allowed us the pleasure of interviewing her and provided us with insight into her art and business.

1. What was it that inspired you to combine your love for Art and Music? When did you realize your current process?

Well, my love for music started at a very young age, I started to listen to Electronic Music when I was around 11 or 12 years old... And I have been developing my taste inside that world ever since. It was not until 2012 that I started thinking seriously about going down a path related with Art… I saw this really good line-up on an event however the Art of the Flyer was not matching the quality of the rest at all. It was really easy to see that the afford was close to null when it came to present something nice-looking to however was interested in that event. It was then that I decided to explore the Art world, “how hard can it be?”. I did a lot of Artworks and different Art styles when I started, with all kind of stuff, however I wanted to make a difference and do something special, that was when I decided to start creating everything from scratch and really designing. Everything was geometric related so that was when I knew what I wanted to present, do and accomplish.

2. Your style is very clean, solid and really reads Techno would you say there have been any past Art movements or designers you feel you work can relate too?

Yes, definitely. There are a lot of projects that have influenced my art and myself, some of them are not even music-related. I can say that Ray Sison (SkilledConcept) is the Designer who influenced me the most… When I discovered his work, which was before I launched TF Concept, it blew my mind…

Everything he did and does is simply perfect, every project I saw done by him, I wanted to learn how to do the exact same thing and be able to replicate it, not to use them, but just to know how he did it and the process he used… It was simply beautiful to see and to admire.


3.  Do you mind telling us what you were doing before you got into designer? What was your relationship with Music and Visual Art?

To be honest I wasn’t doing much… I was somewhat lost in search of a  career path… young and lost. Seven years ago it was just nice to go to parties, it was a whole new world for me. It was something extravagant and intensive in my life and I appreciated it to its fullest, especially what was being offered to me in terms of music, I started going to incredible places in the amazing city of Lisbon. I grew a lot culturally, which influenced me on going to the art field. It was a process that happen in the right way.I’m very glad it happened because I strongly believe that art connects Music and People, and that somehow I’m making a difference.

4. What process do you enjoy most about making Art?

The process I enjoy the most, is to simply create! It’s  a simple perfect format. When I start a project for a client , I launch Illustrator and open a new file and all I can see is a white canvas artboard and the title is “Untitled-1”. It is the beginning of that story, to choose the colors, to place the lines here and there, to start imagining it and transmit it to a whole new artwork.

5. Is it possible to describe how it feels when you hold a vinyl release that contains your Art on it?

It’s incredible, to see my art on a vinyl and to realize that somebody believed in me and trusted that I was the right person to make it happen, it’s simply the best feeling.A vinyl is something physical and a part of history… The history of that person, that label, that project.

Actually, my first big Design project was a vinyl release for Crystal Structures Records owned by Vinyl Speed Adjust and I was pretty nervous at the time, I kept asking myself if I was screwing something it up or if it looked good enough, questioning the reaction would be…

I can now say that I have done the artwork of more than two dozens vinyl’s ,it’s simply wondrous.

6. What projects are you going to working on next, what can we expect to see?

Well, I’m always searching for projects that can relate and connect with what I do. I feel there are a lot of artists who have not yet come across my the way I make art and vice-versa , there are probably lots of artists and projects that I have yet to connect with.  So I hope to see more artists  getting on board geometric Art-“train”.I also want to keep collaborating with apparel projects, it is also something that I myself identify  with and it’s a very interesting area.

The  next biggest thing for me suppose, will be the launch of an online store with print-screens designed exclusively by me. I will do a series entitled “Interpretation of Minimal design” and another Series entitled “Less is more”. It will be very abstract both of them.I have also been thinking about launching my own vinyl-only label, but that’s a project that will take much longer.

7. People tend forget to be a full time artist really means being an entrepreneur how do you feel about this and how does this relate to your process?

Yes, exactly! Well, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Compared to other kinds of full-time jobs, I’m pretty lucky in certain aspects, for example I can basically work anywhere at any time. All I need is my laptop and a quiet place to get my work process going. I don’t have to be in the same place, five days per week, I can say that I am very lucky that way. Also I do what I love, I create what gives me joy and fulfils me.

However, the struggle is real in other aspects, since it is a freelancer job sometimes can be hard when it comes to pitching the right client and making him understand what I’m trying to do and why she/he should invest in art. It can be nerve wrecking to see clients walk away for example… Personally, I prefer to work with “frequent” clients instead of doing one project here and one project there . So when you struggling with something that's when reality kicks in and it can be kind of demoralizing. However it’s also good to move on sometimes and I can say that I am  really lucky to work on the projects that I am given . Also I’m very grateful for all the friendships I have created since I started my project in 2013.
